If your perfume is gone by lunch, the bottle is usually not the problem. Fragrance behaves differently depending on your skin, the time of day and where you spray it. Here is what actually changes how long a scent stays with you.
1. Spray on skin that is still damp
Fragrance clings to oil and moisture. On dry skin the top notes evaporate fast and take the rest with them. Put on an unscented lotion or body oil first, then spray while the skin is still slightly damp. Straight out of the shower is the best moment of the day.
2. Pick the right spots
Warm points push scent into the air: the inner wrists, the base of the throat, behind the ears, the inside of the elbows, behind the knees. Two or three of those are enough. Spraying your whole neck does not make a fragrance last longer, it only makes the first hour louder.
3. Do not rub your wrists together
It is the most common habit and it does real damage. Rubbing crushes the top notes and heats the skin, which speeds up evaporation. Spray, then let it dry on its own.
4. Know what you actually bought
Concentration decides a lot. An eau de toilette usually sits around 5 to 15 per cent fragrance oil and lasts three to five hours. An eau de parfum is closer to 15 to 20 per cent and lasts five to eight. Neither is better. They are for different moments: the eau de toilette is lighter for the office, the eau de parfum carries an evening.
5. Keep the bottle out of the bathroom
Heat, light and humidity break fragrance down, and the shelf above the sink has all three. A drawer or a closed cabinet in a cool room keeps a bottle good for years.
6. Layer instead of re-spraying
Unscented moisturiser under the fragrance does more than a second spray four hours later. If you do want to refresh, carry a small bottle and reapply once, on the wrists only.
Match the scent to the day
Most people wear one fragrance for everything, which is exactly why it stops being noticed. Fresh, citrus and green scents read well in daylight and in an office. Vanilla, amber, tonka and woods do better in the evening and in cold weather.
